Head coach Tyronn Lue was getting around on a scooter to take pressure off of a lower leg injury he was at every summer-league game. Summer league in Las Vegas allowed for the front office, coaches and non-participating players to get together. It’s just that the business is not going to resemble the hot stove rush hour of the first days of free agency the baristas are going to take rest breaks and clean the store for a bit. With a beaucoup of tradable contracts compared to other teams that could pursue Harden or other players, the Clippers are going to be open for business. The Clippers will still keep a pulse on that potential deal and other smaller ones that would achieve the ideals of consolidating the depth on the roster as president of basketball operations Lawrence Frank said on draft night, the roster the Clippers have now may not be the same roster when the season begins in the fall or when it continues in winter’s trade deadline or when it finalizes in time for a spring postseason run. 27, 2012 - four days before Houston’s regular-season opener that year.Īnyone waiting on that particular transaction might want to take a walk outside, because it’s not happening anytime soon. Even going back to how Morey acquired Harden in the first place shows how late these things can come together, as Harden wasn’t traded by the Oklahoma City Thunder to Morey’s Rockets until Oct. The February before that, 76ers president of basketball operations Daryl Morey finally traded the inactive and disgruntled Ben Simmons for (ironically) Harden. Kyrie Irving’s opt in with the Brooklyn Nets last summer went smoother than this the Nets did not wind up trading Irving until the weekend before the trade deadline this past February. The timing of this transaction has not gone the way that Chris Paul’s 2017 opt in went when the Clippers sent him to Harden’s Houston Rockets. Though the idea is to upgrade and consolidate, it’s a roster that could be the one the Clippers enter training camp with:īut Harden’s opt in gave Philadelphia the control of when and where Harden would get moved. The reality for Preston and Moon is that the roster was full from the time first-round rookie Kobe Brown signed his contract. Preston has some NBA tools (the passing acumen is special, he doesn’t take bad shots, and he has a nose for rebounding), but the concerns with his strength and athleticism belie his smarts and length. Preston stayed healthy and had a stellar 30:8 assist-turnover ratio, but the five summer-league games did not significantly change thoughts about where Preston is at this stage. Unlike Moon, Preston had an up-and-down experience in summer league, scoring the exact number of points (45) on the exact number of field goal attempts (41) as he did two summers ago when he was a rookie. Jason Preston, a 2021 second-round pick, has a contract guarantee date today (July 18). Moon isn’t the only Clippers point guard who is unsure of what the future holds. That leaves two open two-way contract spots, with one likely earmarked for rookie second-round small forward Jordan Miller. That hasn’t prevented them from deciding on the other parts of the roster that are easier decisions, such as second-year center Moussa Diabaté agreeing to another year on a two-way contract on Friday. But at this point, the Clippers are focused elsewhere. The Clippers believe Moon is a legitimate NBA player. ![]()
